Fourth of July
We had a fun 4th this year. Our nephew, Preston's cousin, Matt Feist got baptized that day so we headed over to their house (Linder Farms) for a celebration. Randy was breaking in his new deep fryer so we had all sort of goodies besides the hamburgers and hot dogs - corn dogs, chicken nuggets, yummy fries, onion rings and super yummy mozzarella sticks. I'm sure we all ate too much. We played there awhile and then headed to Nate and Laura's for some down time. Then it was off to Melba for fireworks!
Melba has the best fireworks, I have decided. Yes, it's a drive out there, but so worth it. They are top notch, just like the river festival used to be. Only better, because they blow up 55 gallon drums of fuel.
Yup, you heard me.
HOW COOL IS THAT!?!?
Anyway. We got to park close and sit on the lawn of a friend of Nate and Laura so there was no smoking or drinking people around. It was so nice. And we were right across the street from the football field where they launch them from. Best seats ever. When they blew up the 55 gallon drums you could feel the heat, like you were standing next to a fire. It was awesome.
Preston wasn't quite so sure about the fireworks. I had him in my lap and had told him before what they would be like but I don't think you can really prepare a 19 month old. He whimpered a bit at the first couple. Then he put one hand up to his mouth. Then the other hand went to his mouth, too. I just cuddled him close and kept his ears covered. Pretty soon though, both hands were over his eyes. I think it was just too much for him. I was impressed that he didn't cry, though. Poor kid. He stayed all balled up like that on our walk back to the car, too. But he was fine after just a little bit. Tired, but fine.
Anyway. We had a good time. Here are some pictures of us and Preston's cousins. I am also going to include a youtube video I found of the barrels being blown up. The quality is not great, nor is the sound but you can get an idea of how cool the explosions are. They are done within the first 35 seconds so don't feel like you have to watch the whole thing. Oh, and notice that the explosions are different colors, too! Not just regular old fire colored! Pretty neat! Oh, one other tidbit (I can't seem to shut up today) they blow them up while the song "Great Balls of Fire" is playing. It's a tradition. Fun stuff!

Okay, so I discovered the video has been removed from youtube. Not sure why the person took it down but oh well. Just believe me, the explosions are AWESOME.
